Myanmar is situated in the southern part of Indochina Peninsula, between Tibet Highland and Malay Peninsula and is bordered on the north by China, on the south by Adaman Sea, on the east by Laos and Thailand, on the west by Bengal Bay and India. Two third of Myanmar people comprise Bamar/Birma ethnic groups. Some other ethnic groups are listed as Karen, Kayah, Arakan/Rakhine, Mon, Kachin, Chin and Ringkya. Myanmar, also well recognized as Birma/Burma, is under military ruler. The ruling military junta changed its name from Birma to Myanmar on June 18, 1989. The change was made to make non-Birma ethnic groups feel that they are part of the country.

Despite several European countries still using the name “Burma” when referring to the country, the United Nations has officially used Myanmar to refer to the country. Agriculture is Myanmar’ basic economy. Its agricultural products include rice, wheat, corn, cotton, sugar cane, and jute. Besides, Myanmar is also known as the world’s producer of teak. In Myanmar, teak is regarded as Statesmanship of Wood, known locally as “Myanmar Treasure”.
